Doom 2016 - $8.99 on Steam

Postby Docjon » Thu Nov 30, 2017 1:21 am

https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/doom-bundle

It's $9.99, but if you use BLACKFRIDAY10 takes it to $8.99. I'd buy it. I'm told it's well worth it, but I'm not sure I'm up to a Doomfest.

I'm kind of in a weird place with games. I've got games I'd like to play, but I never get around to it. I think I have too much on my mind to just relax.

It was worth every penny at full price. This is a steal.

You can get a 3 pack for $20.
I will go in for that if anyone else wants to.

Quoting myself here...

It says this is coop?????
Unsure how many players etc.... Do you just play the entire game together???

If so I am buying it. Maybe we can play it tonight.

Anyway no coop is not for the campaign mode...
I am confused on what you can do coop now....

We can buy a 3 pack

Edit: Oops, sorry I misread that The $20 is for 3 products, not a 3 pack of the new Doom.

Still $9 is not bad.

Yeah, I never noticed any co-op on this before. I'd have been a lot more interested in it. If anyone digs anything up, let us know, and I'll do the same.
I know that this is good - everyone raves about it - but being single player, I'm afraid it'll sit a long time before I mess with it at all, and I've never been a HUGE Doom fanboy, not since Unreal came along. That's always been more my speed.

I've been reading bits about the new Unreal engine for a year or 2 now, but it seems like they're dicking around with it like it's a mod or hobby.

I know nothing of a co-op unless it was added at some point. The multiplayer is the normal fair for a Doom/Quake/Unreal type games.

Wow.

Too cool, too fast-paced, it's like playing on ice! I'm getting 60 fps on my gtx960 and 1700x.

The checkpoints are a little unforgiving. Hit a rough patch. Damn, but that pistol is near useless already.

Amazingly well-done so far.

Still more of an Unreal fan. . .when are we gonna see some more Unreal? Even UT would be cool. They've been pimping the latest unreal engine development for years. What the HELL? Suddenly the Unreal team is acting like a Steam Early Access developer, dragging things out for years. Shit or get off the pot!

If you have the option to use the Vulcan API in the video settings, use it. It is amazing. It's the only game I ever played that actually doubled your FPS with two cards... so well engineered.

Docjon wrote:The checkpoints are a little unforgiving. Hit a rough patch. Damn, but that pistol is near useless already.

Just keep playing. You'll unlock intel on the monsters to learn how to defeat them more efficiently... and you'll need it. Like anything you'll also get better at it as you play more of it. You can always cheat a little and look up the same tactics on YouTube, see them demonstrated. I found it rewarding by solving each monster as a puzzle in game, like old school.

Some monsters force you to rush them, out in the open, balls to the wall, guns ablazing. I won't tell you which one(s) tend to force you to do it, because you'll figure it out. ;) It is cool that the game doesn't punish you for being over-aggressive like many semi-realistic based military shooters (Battlefield, ARMA, etc) - in was a fun change of pace for me to actually benefit from my adrenaline rush in a firefight (instead of die for it).

Enjoy!

Gonna play some more now. I left off last night in that big indoor area where the facility is overheating, and there's molten metal at the bottom. Huge level, so glad there are a couple checkpoints!

I'll check out the Vulcan driver thing. I've got v-sync on, so I won't get more than 60fps, but I don't recall ever seeing it drop more than a couple FPS below that. Of course, when the SHTF, I'm too busy to look at the FPS. :) I hate those friggin' spawn-nests!

Speaking of FPS, I'm liking the power of the new machine. It's given me a nice FPS bump in some of my favorite games, like Fallout 4, Planetside 2, etc. Not a ton, but even 10-15 fps with slightly higher gfx settings is nice when you're already running 35-45 fps. Gonna keep an eye out for gfx card deals in the next 6 months or so. Looked at a 780ti today for ~$200 shipped. Would have been a decent FPS bump now, but decided it was another 2-year solution at best, and it was old and power-hungry. Gonna hold out and see what happens with newer cards and pricing. I'd LOVE to get something in the 1070ti power-range, but figure 1070 is the likely affordable target. We'll see.

Back to DOOM: That damn hell knight is a bitch!

In what order did you augment the armor suit? I did Health, Heath, because that seems to be a plentiful boost that I can fill frequently. Armor seems less so, harder to come by, and so, harder to max out. Thinking I'll go with an Ammo augment next, as that would be helpful in some bigger battles, particularly with the mini-rockets and three-shot shotgun burst. That'll give me more chainsaw fuel as well, and I can get more ammo from that. Win-win.

The security demons with the shield, I use the shotgun grenades and hit beside/behind them. They're good, though, and they'll angle the shield if they see you aiming off to their side. GAH! Gotta figure out those weapon boosts a little better. I thought that if I bought one, the other went away, but I think I can switch them out as needed. 3-shot-burst/grenade on the shotgun, etc.

REALLY well-done game, as Prophet was saying in this thread. Knew I'd play it eventually after he started talking about it. I wish Epic would bring back some old-school gaming with their Unreal game. Just redo the 15-20 year old games in that awesome new engine they have, with just a tweak or two to update it for modern tastes. I might be tempted to pre-order that, if they had a discount for doing so.

Most older games would need more work because of the advances in gaming since then, but I think Doom shows there are a few that will translate well with little change to the basic gameplay. Unreal would be one. Half-life, in the new Unreal engine, would be another. Damn, that would be awesome.

I used to save one weapon specifically for Hell Knights, to counter their melee attacks. It is fun & effective. ;)

Docjon wrote:In what order did you augment the armor suit?

I maxed out health, then started working on armor. That's when I realized I totally fucked myself. I ran out of ammo like crazy in big fights, ended up having to grind my way through it until I was able to carry enough to do the job. Honestly you'd probably just be fine rolling through the health, armor & ammo each time you get the opprotunity to upgrade. Just don't neglect ammo upgrades for too long or you'll pay for it like I did. My mistake did force me to get good with ALL the weapons though as I needed them all to get through a fight.

Docjon wrote:REALLY well-done game, as Prophet was saying in this thread.

Indeed. I was so pleasantly surprised. They friggin nailed it. They hinted at DOOM 2: Hell On Earth being announced soon.

Docjon wrote:I wish Epic would bring back some old-school gaming with their Unreal game.

It would be so awesome if they did. That game was ahead of it's time. They could definitely tweak it up to meet the expectations of modern games.

I switched to the Vulcan API. Seems to run nice. Not sure it's better - was getting 60 fps in Vsync before, getting it now. I think it's causing Doom to crash though, when I alt-tab out. I can't look stuff up in google then switch back to the game. It didn't do that before. Gonna turn off Vulcan and see if that helps.

One thing I found I don't like about the game - the random, loose items like boxes and gas tanks etc, have weird, unrealistic physics. They bounce everywhere when bumped and make a lot of noise, often bugging so that they rattle constantly.

That's about it, though :)

Amazing.

This sort of shoot-em-up isn't really my thing anymore, but they MADE it my thing. It's that well-done. I don't much like the whole 'Hell' and demons theme, but again, so well-done that I'm enjoying it anyway. Love walking around and exploring, kind of get pissed when demons show up and ruin my walk :)

Oh, and yeah, the Vulkan API was causing it to crash when I alt-tabbed out. It seemed fine otherwise, though I can't say if it was BETTER. Both ran 60fps and looked great to me. Back to OpenGL, though.

Yeah, I'd recommend it. There are aspects of it I'm not wild about - the monsters teleport in, so you don't really walk up on a group and have an idea what you're up against. You get attacked and attacked, and then they stop teleporting in. I don't care for that, but the game just draws me in, I want to explore and see what's next.

It's not rocket science to play it, but it has a LITTLE bit of choice and thinking involved, keeps it interesting. You modify your weapons as you go (just 2 kinds of mods per weapon, with 2-3 levels of each), and your armor, so you get to customize to your preferred style, but it's not hard to think about or do. The maps are as good as anything you'd find in Half-Life, great level design.

At the beginning, when modding your armor, alternate between increasing your health and ammo, and that will get you around the biggest mistake you might make.
